James Ilgenfritz and I have been orbiting around each other for years, working in similar communities of musicians, but never quite landing a gig together, until March 2021 when Elliott Sharp invited us to perform as part of his Carbon Orchestra at Roulette in Brooklyn, New York. We spoke briefly after the gig and promised each other we'd try to find a a way to work together.

At that point I had started my massive recording project, releasing one full-length recording a week, and I thought that a collaboration with James would be perfect. I reached out to him later in the year and to my delight he enthusiastically agreed to a session together. A short while later he asked if I would be willing to include Ras Moshe on the session. Willing? I would be honored! I've admired Ras's work for many years and I was humbled at the prospect of making music with him.

So we set the date, nabbed the studio at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, and shared some ideas over email and Zoom, and got together.

The magic was immediate. The music flowed effortlessly, as if we had been playing together for decades. In a way we had, given our similar backgrounds and musical vocabularies, but there was something else there that day. It just felt RIGHT. We played and played, doing multiple takes of my graphic scores ("Brain Trust" and "60") and one very focused and successful take of James's "As Above So Below." At the end we agreed that this was just the beginning. I'm looking forward to many more years of collaborative work, and we offer this recording to the world as an appetizer. More to follow.
